The history of France begins with the first human occupations of the territory corresponding to the current country. To the groups present since the Paleolithic and the Neolithic, successive waves of Celts were added in the Bronze and Iron Ages, then in the 3rd century of Germanic peoples (Franks, Visigoths, Alamans, Burgundians) and in the 9th century of Scandinavians called Normans. The name of France comes from a Germanic people, the Franks. Clovis (466-511), king of the Salian Franks, sealed the alliance of the Frankish royalty with the Catholic Church by his baptism in Reims.
